Block O’Toole & Murphy’s very own Stephen J. Murphy was featured in Forbes Advisor’s 2023 list of the Best Personal Injury Lawyers in New York City. The prestigious list features a careful selection of 15 attorneys chosen based on their backgrounds, credentials, and accomplishments.

As mentioned by Forbes, Mr. Murphy attended St. John’s University School of Law where he graduated near the top of his class. In the early years of his career, he honed his legal skills working as a homicide prosecutor for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office before eventually transitioning to handling construction accident and serious personal injury cases. He joined the Law Firm of Block O’Toole & Murphy in 2005 and has since worked hard to achieve the best results possible for his clients.
Throughout his career in civil practice, Mr. Murphy has achieved more than $450,000,000 in results. Since 2013 he has obtained in excess of $45,000,000 annually in client settlements. His efforts have provided significant relief for victims of accidents ranging from construction and work accidents to auto accidents, among other personal injury matters.
Notable results include a record-breaking verdict for a 60-year-old Vietnam army veteran who was severely injured when he was struck by an impaired driver while attempting to help drivers involved in a separate car crash. Working with Partner Daniel O’Toole, Mr. Murphy obtained $32,756,156 for his client, the largest reported non-medical malpractice verdict in Long Island history.
Mr. Murphy’s hard work and dedication to his craft have been remarked by many. In 2019, he was recognized by The St. Jude Children’s Hospital as their “Volunteer of the Year.” He has been recognized in the “Best Lawyer in America” list every year since 2013. From 2010-2023, he has been named a “New York Super Lawyer,” placing him within the top five percent of lawyers in the New York Metropolitan Area. And in 2022, he was honored with the Best Lawyers “New York City Lawyer of the Year Award.”
Mr. Murphy’s desire to help those in need goes beyond the walls of the courtroom. He is an active member of St. Jude Children’s Hospital’s fundraising team. Each year, Block O’Toole & Murphy works hard to organize and sponsor the Autumn Wine Tasting to raise funds for St. Jude.
